About Course

This 5-hour asynchronous virtual training provides knowledge of how to implement Story Champs® with complete fidelity, covering basic and enhanced story structure. You will learn the evidence behind Story Champs®, walk through the materials of your kit, and learn the explicit teaching procedures that make up the lesson plans for large group, small group, and one on one instruction.

What Will You Learn?

  • Locate and use the lesson plans and materials that come with the Story Champs kit.
  • Use the Quick Start Guide for guidance on scope and sequence.
  • Implement Story Champs teaching procedures for lessons targeting retell and personal generation using Basic and Enhanced story structures.
  • Make data-based decisions with progress monitoring.

Course Content

Module 1: Introduction to the Course
This module will provide an overview of the learning objectives, agenda, expectations, and contact information for this asynchronous Intro to Story Champs training course. Completion of this course results in a certificate for 5 CEU / CE hours.

Module 2: Background and Purpose of Story Champs
In this module, we provide a review of the research and evidence behind Story Champs®. We will discuss the why of narrative intervention and look at reading failure data from a few countries.

Module 3: Unboxing the Story Champs Kit
In this module we will be unboxing each physical material found in the Story Champs kit. Please have your kit on hand and follow along as we go through each material to familiarize yourself with the kit.

Module 4: Story Champs and MTSS
In this module we will discuss how Story Champs fits in a multi-tiered system of supports, specifically geared towards language. We will have an overview of tier 1, tier 2, and tier 3 support, but we will go over those tiers in greater depth in later modules.

Module 5: Selecting a Lesson Plan
In this module we will discuss how to select a lesson plan. We will reference the Quick Start Guide in this process as well as the table of contents for the Master Lesson Plans found in the Story Champs manual. Please have these materials on hand as you follow along.

Module 6: Selecting a Story
In this module we will discuss how to select a story for your lesson. We will walk through each of the story levels found in the Storybook and how they differ from one another. Please have your storybook on hand as well as some colored pencils (used to color code story grammar) for this module.

Module 7: Illustrations and Icons
In this module we will unpack the different visual stimulus materials that can be used in the Master Lesson Plans. You will learn when to use certain visual stimulus materials and when to fade them out of the lesson.

Module 8: Implementing Lessons
In this module we will review the explicit teaching procedures that can be found in each lesson plan. This will reinforce the importance of using a lesson plan every time you conduct a Story Champs session.

Module 9: Large Group Lessons
In this module we will look at large group lesson plans and teaching procedures. We will walk through the typical steps of a large group lesson and watch videos on Master Lesson Plans 1 and 3.

Module 10: Small Group Lessons
In this module we will look at small group lesson plans and teaching procedures. We will walk through the typical steps of a large group lesson and watch videos on Master Lesson Plans 25 & 23 with MLP Add-On 58.

Module 11: One on One Lessons
In this module we will look at one on one lesson plans and teaching procedures. We will walk through the typical steps of a large group lesson and watch videos on Master Lesson Plans 44 & 48.

Module 12: Extending Your Lessons
In this module we will look over all the extra resources that you have access to for extending you lessons whether that is within the session or activities to be sent home. These resources can be found as part of your digital materials, so make sure that you can access those materials.

Module 13: Pacing and Progress Monitoring
In this module we will cover how to pace your sessions, when to move to a new level of complexity, and how long to work on a particular level. We will briefly walk through the administration and scoring procedures of the CUBED-3 Narrative Language Measures subtest. We will discuss how to make data-informed decisions about instruction.

Module 14: Case Study
In this module we will walk through the steps it takes to evaluate a learner, place them into a level of Story Champs, carry out intervention, and progress monitoring. This will refer to data collected from the CUBED-3 NLM.

Module 15: Conclusion
In this module we will review what we have learned throughout the course, walk through a few helpful resources, and discuss how to access the course completion certificate.
